Practising Pilates Reformer During Ramadan
Ramadan is a different kind of month. The body runs on a different engine — less available fuel during the day, shifted sleep, energy distributed in a different pattern. For many, it is a chance to actually listen to what the body is saying. And that is exactly why Pilates Reformer fits so well into it.
What the body goes through while fasting
Fasting asks something different from the body than a regular day. Blood sugar fluctuates, hydration is managed in precise windows, fatigue shows up differently depending on the day. This is not a state of weakness — it is a state of heightened awareness. The body knows how to handle it, as long as you don't force it.
When to practise
This question comes up every year. Our recommendation: within the two hours before iftar, or if you prefer. Before breaking the fast, the body is still in energy-conservation mode — a gentle session at that point can actually support the release of endorphins that makes the wait easier. After iftar, you are practising in partial digestion, so it is worth being mindful of exercises that compress the abdomen.
What we do differently
- Lighter spring resistance and slower tempo — precision is always worth more than intensity
- Avoid sequences with explosive effort or prolonged breath holds
- Focus on spinal mobility and chest-opening exercises, which are genuinely restoring for the nervous system
- Shorten sessions to 45 minutes when needed — less is fine, as long as you show up
What the month actually brings to practice
Something unexpected happens for many people during Ramadan: without the usual rush, concentration sharpens. On the Reformer, when you are not chasing raw performance, you notice more. The spring resistance, the placement of the pelvis, the quality of the breath — everything becomes clearer. Clients who practise year-round often say this is the month when they make the most progress in body awareness.
There is something in the sobriety of fasting that rhymes with the sobriety of Pilates. Both ask you to do better with less.
